Trick or Treat 2017 Dear Creator Letter
Sep. 12th, 2017 08:15 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
First of all, thank you for creating for me! I do love Trick or Treat; this year, I was really struggling to narrow down my choices so I decided to lean into the Hallowe'en theme a bit more than I usually do by requesting fandoms where the canons at least sometimes have supernatural/creepy/otherwise Hallowe'en-y things goings on. But if Hallowe'en's not your thing and you're just treating this as any other exchange, that's equally fine by me: it was just a way of deciding.
I've tried to keep this letter marginally shorter than some of my previous ones, so where I am repeating fandoms I've linked rather than doing wholesale cut and paste -- feel free to ignore the links completely, though, or equally free to dig through my older letters in general, if you want to; my tastes haven't really changed that much. (I marginally revised my noncon-related DNW earlier this year after realising it was too restrictive of things I was interested in, but that's about it.) However, please don't read anything into either differing lengths of prompt sections or differing numbers of previous requests as to my having a preference for one fandom over another -- each and every one of these fandoms is in my request because I would love to receive something for it.
I am requesting both fic and art (and both tricks and treats, though, depending on the nature of the canon, sometimes the balance is a bit lopsided in terms of the prompts) for all of these fandoms. My AO3 name is weakinteraction - same as this dreamwidth.

General likes
I am up for a wide range of types of fanworks, and equally happy with ratings anywhere on the scale.
I genuinely do equally like all of gen, slash, het and femslash. On the shipping side of things, I have noted the ships I particulary ship where they exist, but I don't really have NOTPs in any of these fandoms, so any combination of characters that you're interested in is absolutely fine with me, and I don't have any objection to requested and/or unrequested characters in background pairings. (As a general note, I am more than happy to handwave that Everyone Is Bi And Poly for the purposes of fanworks.)
Tropes-wise, I am particularly fond of time travel, canon-divergent AUs (possibly particularly relevant to this exchange: apocalypses where some key event in canon didn't go the right way), people with issues relating to identity (in the sense of things like secret identities and amnesia) and telepathy. In terms of relationship dynamics, I like all sorts of things but particularly: friends-to-lovers, friends-with-benefits, enemies-to-lovers, lovers-to-enemies(-who-are-maybe-occasionally-still-lovers-against-their-better-judgement), loyalty kink, and you-and-me-against-the-universe sorts of situations. Many (but not quite all) of my favourite characters share traits of being competent and getting on with their jobs/vocations/whatever, particularly in the sense of Doing The Right Thing over their strong personal preferences to do the opposite and/or against a general angsty background.
Fic likes: Overall, I am honestly very easy to please; I genuinely like pretty much all types of fic, from humorous vignettes, to angsty introspection, to twisty plotty adventure stories, casefic, slice of life, or digging into the canon's worldbuilding, and all points in between. I do want to make a positive point of the fact that fic-wise I'm always up for non-standard formats, anything from epistolatory or verse through to stories presented through documentary evidence, 1st/2nd person, present/future tense, IF, etc. etc. Again, if it works for what you want to do, I'll lap it up. (This is not to say that I don't enjoy reading third person, past tense, because I definitely do! I just don't want you to be put off doing other things if your inspiration takes you in that direction.) If you're going down the worldbuilding route, do feel free to include no characters whatsoever.
Art likes: I do like use of light and shade in a picture, and interesting Easter-egg-y type stuff going on in the background (if there is one). An action scene that's a snapshot from an adventure, the characters in the middle of kicking ass. Goofy hijinks when the characters are off-duty. Portrayals of canon-divergent AU versions of the characters very, very welcome if the inspiration strikes you (eg: Aphra and Sana facing off with lightsabers in Jedi training, Squirrel Girl: Agent of SHIELD, etc.). For shippier stuff, little moments of intimacy: stolen kisses, hurt/comfort type stuff (but please not too much on the hurt front), that sort of thing. (I have no problem receiving NSFW art, fwiw.) I am also definitely up for things like diagrams, maps, etc. In the same Easter-egg-y vein mentioned earlier, things like that presented with in-universe trappings would be lovely. I've provided some specific art prompts where I can think of them, but in cases where I haven't I hope at least some of my more general prompts lend themselves to being illustrated.
DNWs
(NB This is a slightly broader list than the DNWs I put into the sign up box itself; those are my absolute not-in-any-way-shape-or-form DNWs -- anything on this list but not the other one you can take as a strong negative preference, rather than an outright no-no.)

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
Previously requested: ToT 2015, Yuletide 2015, Fandom Growth 2017
Requested characters: Garth Marenghi, Dean Learner, Todd Rivers, Madeleine Wool
General Notes: I nominated the behind-the-scenes characters, but am equally happy to receive something set entirely in the show-within-the-show, or something that mixes the two together as the show itself did. This is a fandom where I'd definitely be up for experimentation with the format, for what it's worth. For example: write in Garth's style, do a piece from one of those '90s cult magazines about this "lost horror classic", invent the internal C4 memos about the cancellation of it, or a movie poster from an AU where it was successful and had a theatrically released spinoff, etc.
Tricks: Canon-typical bad horror. Or spooky goings on behind the scenes: how does Garth deal with the supernatural when it seems to be happening to him in real life? A sketch of a planned monster costume (with Garth's annotations all over it?). What happened to Madeleine?
Treats: Did anything come of the cast being reunited for the commentaries? One thing leads to another at a wrap party (between any pair or more of the characters, tbh). What if Garth paid the bills by also churning out romance novels under an unsubtle pen name?

16 Ways to Kill a Vampire at McDonald's (Twine game)
Source link: You can play the game online for free here.
Requested characters: Maggie, Luke, Claire, Lucy, The Vampire, Bess
General Notes: I love the fun tone of this canon, and especially the way that Everything Is True in relation to vampires. The way it makes you inhabit Lucy's relationship dynamics works really nicely for me, too, with her feelings becoming clear in the slight disconnect between the player and her, with her occasionally resisting/outright refusing to use certain options.
Tricks: The vampire's POV on the events of the game. More vampire hunting shenanigans for Lucy, Maggie and Luke. The game portrays an atypical experience, what does a more typical one look like? Exactly how bad at it were they when they first got started? Or do they find themselves having to deal with other supernatural creatures, and having to learn a bunch of new lore?
Treats: Lucy/Maggie/Luke OT3 (it's never quite made explicit in the game that that's what's going on, as far as I can tell, but it seems pretty heavily implied to me), or any subpairing of that. Claire going to find Lucy, as implied by the extra ending. Bess's backstory: she seems remarkably unfazed by the idea that there's a vampire in the McDonald's, after all. (I guess this one could also be a trick, depending on the direction you want to take it.)

Requested characters: Biker Girl Taylor, Bird In A Gilded Cage Taylor, Cat Burglar Taylor, Circus Ringmaster Taylor, Country Taylor, Domme Taylor, Nice Nerd Girl Taylor, Queen of Snakes Taylor, Receipts-Collecting Taylor, Swan Ballet Dancer Taylor, VMA Awards Taylor, Zombie Taylor
General Notes: Feel free to land anywhere you like on the spectrum between "completely made up back story for what's going on" and "elaborate celebrity gossip meta".
Tricks: There's some sort of sinister cloning programme behind all this. Zombie Taylor will damned well take that call if it kills her (again). What, exactly, is the thing that she has just done that she's singing about? Anything and everything to do with the snakes bit.
Treats: Something expanding on the heist elements would be fun. Selfcest orgy.

Bas Lag - China MiƩville
Requested characters: Bellis Coldwine, Uther Doul, The Weaver
General Notes: I love the sheer size and variety of the worldbuilding in Bas Lag -- it really does feel like a huge, rich environment. And there's reference to other planes of reality too, though we never get to seem the directly. Feel free to ignore the nominated characters and write about some corner of it we only briefly heard about in canon, or flat out make up new places on the map. (On the art side, feel free to make up a map. I'm normally take-it-or-leave-it about maps in fantasy novels, but I would have loved to have one in The Scar.)
Tricks: Encounters with weird creatures out in the seas of Bas Lag. (Either made up ones, or ones from canon -- in particular, I always feel like I could have read an entire book about grindylow politics when it gets to that bit.) Thaumaturgy gone wrong. Something about the Weaver, either from the POV of its adherents or the Weaver itself?
Treats: Uther uses his possibility powers to arrange things differently. Anything even vaguely resembling Bellis/happiness. The Weaver does something nice for someone, quite possibly without really realising.

(OK, wow, I hadn't realised how often I tend to request this. I guess it sits at the intersection of a lot of my interests and so is eligible for most exchanges I sign up for ...)
Requested characters: Deirdre Skye, Corazon Santiago
General Notes: I do ship Deirdre/Corazon hard, but I'm equally open to non-ship-fic about each of them separately or both of them platonically together learning to get to grips with life on Planet. (Also: I am extremely agnostic about Alien Crossfire; feel free to do any of ignore it, incorporate it, or borrow some elements from it while ignoring others completely.)
Tricks: Mind worms. Nerve stapling. Punishment spheres. Genejack factories. The Dream Twister. (+ Any others of the many creepy/scary things which are selectable in game as units/actions/buildings. I do kind of love that the game mechanics make it entirely possible to lead humanity into a crapsack future and make it a possible path to victory, even though in my actual gameplay this actually comes out as [Leader] Would Never and deciding not to build them. Well, except the mind worms. They're just misunderstood.)
Treats: Telepathic communion (with other humans and/or Planet). Beautiful sights no one who stayed behind on Earth ever got to see. Transcendence. ... One last night of the human experience before Transcendence.

Marvel 616
Previously requested: Femslash Ex 2015 (Phyla/Heather), Yuletide 2015 (Phyla and Heather), Marvel is Marvel (all), Femslash Ex 2016 (all), ToT 2016 (Squirrel Girl), Yuletide 2016 (Squirrel Girl), Choc Box 2017 (Doreen/Nancy), Smut Swap 2017 (Doreen/Nancy), Fandom Growth 2017 (Squirrel Girl), Femslash Ex 2017 (all)
Requested characters: Nancy Whitehead, Doreen Green, Heather Douglas, Phyla-Vell
General Notes: These obviously split into two pairs of characters (both of which I ship) so I've prompted accordingly, but if you do feel inspired to have them all meet then don't hold back. In general, I am fine with you including other characters from their corner of Marvel (e.g. Chipmunk Hunk and Koi Boi for Nancy adn Doreen, the other Guardians for Heather and Phyla), and also very much in favour of randomly bringing in whoever your favourite other Marvel characters are; I may not follow all of their books religiously but I'm vaguely aware of most of what's going on and if you do hit something that I'm unfamiliar with, you'll probably just be introducing to my newest fave.
Tricks: Various supernatural beings are canon in Marvel, so an encounter with one or more of those. How does Nancy cope if Doreen turns out not to be available? On the Phyla and/or Heather side, there's all the Oblivion, Dragon of the Moon, etc. stuff to mine for cosmic scale angst.
Treats: Shipfic of any flavour for Nancy/Doreen or Heather/Phyla. What do Nancy and Doreen get up to on Hallowe'en? (Is there Space Hallowe'en for Heather and Phyla? How do they feel about it when they've faced off against actual cosmic horrors?) Fix it fic for Heather/Phyla.

Star Wars (Marvel Comics)
Previously requested: SW Rares 2016 (Poe/Terex), Choc Box 2017, May the 4th 2017, Fandom Growth 2017, Femslash Ex 2017 (Aphra/Sana)
Requested characters: Chelli Lona Aphra, Sana Starros, 0-0-0, Queen Trios, Poe Dameron, Terex
General Notes: Out of these characters, I particularly ship Aphra/Sana and Poe/Terex. Also very open to worldbuilding, especially on the Shu-Torun side of things. Triple Zero was my free extra character; if I'd had more than one, I would also have asked Pumpkin King to add BT-1. If you want to cross over the eras and have older versions of the OT-era characters interacting with Poe and/or Terex, I'd definitely be up for that.
Tricks: Scratch the surface of anything in Star Wars and there's darkness there, so: Anything about Terex's current situation. Angsty Aphra backstory. Angsty Sana backstory. Angsty Aphra/Sana backstory. Triple Zero causing mayhem. The brutality of life on Shu-Torun, only barely masked by the exaggerated civility. If you're up to date with Aphra, Rur seems to me to be a good source of material with a Hallowe'en-y feel material, but so too could all sorts of other ancient artifacts. Ancient cosmic horrors and/or giant monsters in general.
Treats: Canon-typical adventures. (Though given what I said about scratching the surface, these could quite possibly be tricks, too, I guess.) Trios navigating life in the New Republic rather than under the Empire -- does much really change? Heist/con type shenanigans with Aphra and/or Sana. Aphra/Sana get back together (probably messily).

Machineries of Empire Series - Yoon Ha Lee
Previously requested: Worldbuilding Ex, Fandom Growth 2017
Requested character: Ajewen Cheris
General Notes: I haven't read Raven Stratagem yet, but fully intend to by the time of reveals, so don't worry about spoilers. Please do feel free to include whoever else you want: requesting like this is a positive choice in Cheris's direction, not a negative choice against anyone else. I love (or love-to-hate, or love-to-love-despite-feeling-like-I-should-hate) all the other characters too, but found myself wanting something Cheris-centric. (Exception: worldbuilding! If you want to explain calendrical mechanics or show me what a servitor's internal log looks like, or something along those lines, go for it.)
Tricks: Calendrical and/or formation effects gone wrong. Remembrances. "Proper Vidona techniques."
Treats: Cheris/happiness, basically. If you want to do shippiness with OFCs or any of the minor female characters she encounters along the way in canon, feel free. Or something related to her special relationship with the servitors.

- extremely fluffy fluff so that essentially all that happens is the characters exchange endearments you'd never hear them use in canon
- character bashing (in all of the canons I've requested, I like all the non-requested characters too, or at least am interested in nuanced takes on their being utter shits)
- any kind of AU apart from canon-divergent
- pregnancy/kidfic (I don't mind occasional appearances by canonical children, but please don't focus on them to the exclusion of all else)
- major character death (exceptions: deaths that happened in canon, but even there I'd prefer not to have a huge focus on characters grieving afterwards or similar; or deaths happening offscreen if a lot of time has passed since the time the character was around in canon, i.e. you don't have to make everyone immortal if you're writing futurefic; also this doesn't apply to apocalyptic canon-divergent AUs, because an apocalypse that everyone happens to survive doesn't really make sense)
- violent non-con (I'm fine with sf/fantasy type noncon like mind control for pairings it would suit, or dubcon of various stripes)
- as far as porn goes, I am generally fine with most stuff; the only things I'd ask you to avoid are breathplay, watersports, bloodplay, vore, scat, and emetophilia.
- incest and under-16s having sex (none of these pairings are anywhere near fitting the bill for either of these, but please no background incest pairings or revealing characters to have been related all along or anything like that)
