Past Imperfect, Future Unknown Letter
Dec. 14th, 2019 10:20 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Hi. (... And sorry not to have managed to get this up before assignments came out.) Thanks for looking at my letter; I hope you find it helpful -- however, I would like to lay out very clearly that I'm a very firm believer in ODAO, so if you want to ignore all of it apart from the DNWs (which are all in the AO3 sign up, though I've provided a bit of amplification for some of them here), go right ahead.
My AO3 name is weakinteraction -- same as this dreamwidth account.
I am up for a wide range of types of fanworks, and equally happy with ratings anywhere on the scale.
I genuinely do equally like all of gen, slash, het and femslash. On the shipping side of things, I don't really have NOTPs in any of these fandoms, so any combination of characters that you're interested in is absolutely fine with me, and I don't have any objection to requested and/or unrequested characters in background pairings. (As a general note, if you are going in a shippy direction I am more than happy to handwave that Everyone Is Bi And Poly for the purposes of fanworks.)
Aside from the time travel tropes (which I'm not really talking about in this section because they're the freeforms for this exchange -- though to be honest a lot of them are just "more of what I like in canon" in this case), I am keen on:
Fic likes: Overall, I am honestly very easy to please; I genuinely like pretty much all types of fic, from humorous vignettes, to angsty introspection, to twisty plotty adventure stories, casefic, slice of life, or digging into the canon's worldbuilding, and all points in between. I do want to make a positive point of the fact that fic-wise I'm always up for non-standard formats, anything from epistolary or verse through to stories presented through documentary evidence, 1st/2nd person, present/future tense, IF, etc. etc. Again, if it works for what you want to do, I'll lap it up. (This is not to say that I don't enjoy reading third person, past tense, because I definitely do! I just don't want you to be put off doing other things if your inspiration takes you in that direction.)
Art likes: I do like use of light and shade in a picture, and interesting Easter-egg-y type stuff going on in the background (if there is one). An action scene that's a snapshot from an adventure, the characters in the middle of kicking ass. Goofy hijinks when the characters are off-duty. Portrayals of canon-divergent AU versions of the characters very, very welcome if the inspiration strikes you. For shippier stuff, little moments of intimacy: stolen kisses, hurt/comfort type stuff (but please not too much on the hurt front), that sort of thing. (I have no problem receiving NSFW art, fwiw.) I am also definitely up for things like diagrams, maps, etc. In the same Easter-egg-y vein mentioned earlier, things like that presented with in-universe trappings would be lovely. I've provided some specific art prompts where I can think of them, but in cases where I haven't I hope at least some of my more general prompts lend themselves to being illustrated. Also, I am very happy to receive things like complex diagrams of overlapping timelines and schematics of time machines or whatever along those lines, as well as more "traditional" illustrations.
DNWs
Not a DNW: character death. As I've been writing the sections it's occurred to me that I should state that clearly, especially as I've requested several canonically dead characters with "fix the death" tags. In particular, I am very willing to be put through the wringer by a story to be about an attempt to do that that ends up failing and/or the character whose death was fixed having to make a choice to sacrifice themselves to restore the canon timeline, etc.
I've done the sections of this letter in a slightly different order to the sign up on AO3, basically to put the franchises together. Also, In cases where I've requested quite a few character/group tags and freeforms, I've sometimes talked about particular ones that I can see ways to put together, but please don't let that stop you from going for other combinations.
Expert Judgment on Markers to Deter Inadvertent Human Intrusion... - Sandia Labs
Requested character(s): Original Character(s)
Freeforms: Trapped in the Distant Future - Apocalypse or Dystopia, Accidental time travel to apocalyptic future
I guess I'm seeing this in terms of someone involved in either the design or the expert judging finding themselves in a future where they are needed? Really feel free to go absolutely wild with this if you want, like maybe they went for all the options simultaneously and it's absolute chaos. (For what it's worth, I spend a lot of my time musing about the sort of thing the report is about, and I think if I have one fixed point of view on this stuff, it's that it's really, really hard to deter humans when they decide that something's worth having/investigating.)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV)
Requested groups: Tara Maclay/Willow Rosenberg/Buffy Summers, Buffy Summers/Faith Lehane
For both of these ships, I'm happy with any configuration/way of getting them together/level of healthiness or unhealthiness, etc.
Freeforms: Character Wakes Up as Future Self with Unexpected Significant Other, Visit To The Past And Return To Present Results In Being Accidental Married to Unexpected Person, Time Travel to fix an apocalyptic future, Time Travel Fix-it - Time Travelers Disagree On How To Fix The Problem, Time travel due to magical artifact breaking, Time travel via magical locale, Character From Future Tries To Convince Current Enemy To Work Together, Time Loop - Character and Enemy Are the Only People Aware of Looping, Falling in love with past version of enemy changes things when character returns to the present, Time travel to save a friend or loved one, Character Invents Time Travel to Save Dead Loved One, Time Travel Fix-It - Canon Is the Fix
There's three(-ish) strands of tags here so I'll try and deal with them in general terms:
Time travel via magic - perfectly happy for it to either be within the characters' control or not. I suppose for many scenarios I'm somewhat imagining Willow as the instigator, but very open to persuasion for other ways of doing it. As a general note on this side of things, I am very happy for you to bring in Illyria from Angel as either/both of character and plot device.
Fix Its - Seeing as every other threat in Buffy leads to an apocalypse, a post-apocalyptic version of the characters coming back in time to set things straight (possibly leading to the "canon is the fix" idea) would be great. On a smaller scale, something about undoing Tara's death would be great (though at the same time if you're going for Tara/Willow/Buffy I'm also happy for it to happen before that as well).
Relationship Status Changes - I think I'm particularly keen on earlier-seasons characters dealing with how things end up, e.g. Buffy discovering she ends up with Faith, not-out-even-to-herself-yet-Willow finding out a lot from visiting a future with Tara and Buffy in it, etc. On the Character & Enemy side of things, I am very much here for all the S3(-4) Buffy/Faith feels. A later Faith travelling back and having to convince an earlier Buffy (or vice versa) would be great.
For either of the Doctor Who requests, I am very happy for you to mix and match Classic and New series, use other characters beyond the ones requested (as long as there's at least some focus on the requested ones), or bring in non-TV material (I am at least vaguely aware of most of it, and particularly keen on the NAs, the EDAs and the DWM comics).
Doctor Who (1963)
Requested characters: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane
I just love their dynamic; "give me some of that nitro-nine you're not carrying", the way she calls him Professor to wind him up but always Doctor when things are getting serious, etc. And the more weird and far-more-than-just-another-Time-Lord you make Seven, the better from my point of view.
Freeforms: Going to see dinosaurs, Character Travels To The Past To Seduce Historical Figure They've Always Had A Crush On, Time Travel Back - Struggling with Restrictive Social and Political Norms, Time Travel Back - Character mentors their own mentor's younger self, Time Travel Back - Younger character travels to older character's childhood, Time Travel as Psychotherapy
Dinosaurs/Historical Crush - Ace persuading the Doctor to use the TARDIS for frivolous reasons is a great idea, and the desire to see dinosaurs bit is very canon. (And if you want to combine the two and have Ace discover that her crush is secretly adinosaur Silurian, then by all means go for it.)
Restrictive Historical Norms/Time Travel as Psychotherapy - could also be summed up as "please give Ace more of the same she gets in canon", I guess.
Ace ending up involved in the Doctor's past - do please feel free to go wild with this one; feel free to use any or all of Lungbarrow canon, the new series stuff from stories like Listen, some unholy combination of the two, something you made up completely for yourself, whatever. (For the "mentors their own mentor's younger self" bit, it really doesn't have to be a young young Doctor - eg Ace finding herself on '70s/'80s Earth and getting Three out of an exile-related funk would be great.)
Doctor Who (2005)
Requested characters/groups: Martha Jones, group: Martha Jones/Chantho, Group: Heather/Bill Potts, Bill Potts, Group: Missy/Bill Potts, Group: Twelfth Doctor & Bill Potts, Group: The Doctor & The Doctor's TARDIS
Martha etc. - this could be during S3 or S4, or through some sort of "Martha starts time travelling again later in life" scenario (either with the Doctor again, with someone else, or independently); I'm happy with canon-level references to her crush on the Doctor if you feel it's appropriate, but please don't focus on it to the exclusion of all else. Always very happy with stuff around Martha's competence, medical or otherwise.
Bill etc. - I really like the way Bill is a self-aware gateway-to-sense-of-wonder character. Definitely keen on her having fun across time and space.
Doctor & the TARDIS - feel free to take this in any direction at all (and, as noted above, feel free to bring in other strands of canon). The one thing I'm not overly keen on is when the TARDIS actually talks telepathically to the Doctor. (On the other hand, if you want to revisit The Doctor's Wife where the TARDIS is somehow embodied, that's fine, but from my point of view it's clear in that that they're not used to verbal communication.)
Freeforms: Time travel adventures, Timehopping To Rescue Others From The Moments Of Their Deaths
I know "time travel adventures" is very broad but it was either that or tick "Any additional tag" which might just possibly have been excessive. For the timehopping, I first selected that tag in relation to Martha/Chantho, but I could also see it as something Heather and Bill get into doing on their adventures, and of course it's canon now as what Testimony is up to if you want to go in that direction.
With Star Trek, as with Doctor Who, I'm happy for you to bring in other parts of the franchise as long as it doesn't completely take over the focus from the requested canon/characters. And this is a bit out-there, but I have been getting very into Star Trek: Timelines (a mobile game which uses temporal anomalies as an excuse to basically have everyone from [almost] every Trek ever interacting with everyone else) over the last few months; if you know it too, you're very welcome to use its specific setting elements.
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Requested characters/groups: group: William Riker/Deanna Troi (ST: TNG), Group: Deanna Troi/Worf (ST: TNG), Guinan (ST: TNG), group: Data/Tasha Yar (ST: TNG), Q (ST: TNG)
I am very happy with poly solutions to the Riker/Troi/Worf love triangle, for what it's worth. Data/Tasha I guess I'm mostly seeing in the fix it line of things but it could just be that they're time travelling for whatever reason before Tasha's canonical death. I included Guinan because I think her timeline sensitivity (as seen eg in Yesterday's Enterprise and Time's Arrow) could be interesting to explore, and Q because he's Q. And although they're not nommed as a group, their antipathy for each other is also really interesting; some sort of "forced to work together" scenario with the two of them could be really fun.
Freeforms: Time Travel - Taken By a Powerful Entity to Learn A Lesson, Time Travel to fix an apocalyptic future, Butterfly Effect - Character Tries to Prevent Other Character's Death, Time travel to save a friend or loved one, Character Invents Time Travel to Save Dead Loved One, Character Wakes Up as Future Self with Unexpected Significant Other, Visit To The Past And Return To Present Results In Being Accidental Married to Unexpected Person, Visitor from another universe stranded on this one is dead love interest's doppelganger
(The powerful entity for that first tag doesn't have to be Q, for what it's worth, though he'd be an obvious choice, I guess.)
The death-averting stuff I'm mostly seeing in terms of Data/Tasha (maybe he doesn't do anything about it until he has the emotion chip?). Likewise, with the stranded visitor, I'm primarily thinking of Yesterday's Enterprise Yar, but feel free to create some other timeline out there for any of the characters if it works.
I really loved what Parallels did with Worf getting increasingly discombobulated by the changes in reality, so if you want to do something along those lines with Worf/Troi (from either of their points of view), then go for it. Something where Deanna is time travelling (mentally or otherwise) and keeps ending up with different partners in different timelines would be fun, for example.
Star Trek: Discovery
Requetsed characters/groups: Group: Me Hani Ika Hali Ka Po & Sylvia Tilly (ST: Discovery), Group: Michael Burnham/Sylvia Tilly (ST: Discovery), Sylvia Tilly (ST: Discovery), Group: Michael Burnham & Mirror Philippa Georgiou (ST: Discovery), Michael Burnham (ST: Discovery), Mirror Philippa Georgiou (ST: Discovery), Group: Gabrielle Burnham/Mirror Philippa Georgiou (ST: Discovery)
Basically Michael, Tilly and Mirror Georgiou are my three faves (but I love literally all the Disco characters, feel free to use anyone/everyone), and here they are and/or groups involving them. For the last ship, I'd be very happy with a "Michael's biological mom who's been watching over her from the future and the twisted evil version of Michael's work mom forced to work together and discovering they've got more in common than either is comfortable with" dynamic.
Freeforms: Time Travel to fix an apocalyptic future, Time Travel Forward - Apocalyptic Ramifications of Canon Events, Time Dilation - Trapped Together in a Pocket Universe for Decades, Time Loop - Character and Enemy Are the Only People Aware of Looping, Time Loop - Character takes a long time to notice that they're looping, Time Travel Via A Spaceship Flying Through A Wormhole
Time Travel to fix an apocalyptic future, Time Travel Forward - Apocalyptic Ramifications of Canon Events - this turned out to be the arc plot of S2, so further exploration of that sort of trope would be great, either in the context of Control or some other crisis. (I mean, one sheaf of apocalyptic timelines has now been averted, but what else might people be inadvertently doing that's going to pay off badly in the future? Do feel free to bring in this sort of thing from other branches of canon if you want, eg the Tox Uthat from Captain's Holiday, Captain Braxton and his general milieu from Voyager, or the ENT Temporal Cold War ...)
Time Dilation - Trapped Together in a Pocket Universe for Decades - this is a trope I absolutely love. It could work for any of the ships here, or indeed just the & relationships, but I think I'm most imagining it for Gabrielle/Mirror Philippa as a way of forcing them to get past their initial reaction to each other.
Time Loop - Character and Enemy Are the Only People Aware of Looping, Time Loop - Character takes a long time to notice that they're looping - again, I'm sort of inspired by the Mudd episode here (a lot of the tags I've chosen for this fandom boil down to "I want more of the same deliciousness that canon gave me, please and thank you", don't they)
Time Travel Via A Spaceship Flying Through A Wormhole - this is perhaps the most obvious example of what I just said; I'm going to be honest, selecting this tag is me being impatient for S3. Please do feel free to make up anything set post-S2. (Or take the tag in another direction, obviously - eg some earlier spaceship coming forward to Discovery's time.)
My AO3 name is weakinteraction -- same as this dreamwidth account.
I am up for a wide range of types of fanworks, and equally happy with ratings anywhere on the scale.
I genuinely do equally like all of gen, slash, het and femslash. Aside from the time travel tropes (which I'm not really talking about in this section because they're the freeforms for this exchange -- though to be honest a lot of them are just "more of what I like in canon" in this case), I am keen on:
- canon-divergent AUs (which I consider to be time-travel-adjacent even when they're not explicitly created by a time travel situation)
- people with issues relating to identity (in the sense of things like secret identities and amnesia)
- telepathy
- A whole raft of different relationship dynamics, eg friends-to-lovers, friends-with-benefits, enemies-to-lovers, lovers-to-enemies(-who-are-maybe-occasionally-still-lovers-against-their-better-judgement), loyalty kink, and you-and-me-against-the-universe sorts of situations
- Many (but not quite all) of my favourite characters share traits of being competent and getting on with their jobs/vocations/whatever, particularly in the sense of Doing The Right Thing over their strong personal preferences to do the opposite and/or against a general angsty background.
Fic likes: Overall, I am honestly very easy to please; I genuinely like pretty much all types of fic, from humorous vignettes, to angsty introspection, to twisty plotty adventure stories, casefic, slice of life, or digging into the canon's worldbuilding, and all points in between. DNWs
- character or ship bashing (in particular, where there are conflicting canon ships for these characters, quietly ignoring them/AU-ing them away/handwaving everyone as being happily poly are all far preferable to me to devoting large chunks of the fic to demonstrating that the canon love interest is The Worst and breaking them up; OTOH, angst where everybody feels bad about it can work just fine)
- non-canon-divergent AUs like coffee shops, A/B/O, etc. (canon-divergent ones, on the other hand, are a big yes)
- pregnancy/kidfic
- watersports
- scat
- emetophilia
- bloodplay
- breathplay
- vore
- violent non-con (coercion/mind control/etc. are fine)
- incest
- underage (my definition isn't quite the same as AO3's: what I don't want is people under 16 having sex; for characters in the 13-15 range I am OK with it being mentioned that they're sexually active if that's plausible given their canon circumstances, but I wouldn't want it front and centre)
Not a DNW: character death. As I've been writing the sections it's occurred to me that I should state that clearly, especially as I've requested several canonically dead characters with "fix the death" tags.
